Temporary Security Guard (Approx. 14 Months)

We are currently embarking on our new Master Plan and creation of a Community Conservation Campus. As one of the GTA’s Top Employers, we are seeking experienced Safety & Security personnel to join our Health & Safety team.

Basic Function: Reporting to the Supervisor of Health, Safety & Security (or designate), the Security services staff member is responsible for the protection of all Zoo assets, the safety of staff and public, while providing customer assistance as required. This position is also responsible for assisting and providing support in implementing the Strategic Plan.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Conduct patrols of the Zoo site and provide protection of all Toronto Zoo assets from any and all causes.

Provide access control to site for both staff & public, protects against the unauthorized removal of Zoo property.

Attends emergency calls as required and takes charge unless or until relieved by more senior personnel.

Conducts detailed investigations and reports his/her findings and recommendations regarding incidents or accidents occurring on Zoo property and any infractions of the applicable federal & provincial laws, the Zoo by-law and polices.

Directs vehicle and pedestrian traffic, provides crowd control, and controls unauthorized parking on Zoo property.

Provides, as necessary, direction and guidance, to seasonal & probationary Security services staff.

Reports, on a routine basis, unsafe/unsightly public and staff work areas and conducts follow-up inspections.

Provide cash escorts, vehicle escorts and non-emergency transportation for Zoo staff to medical facilities when directed.

Provide guest services including, but not limited to, site information, vehicle access & boosts, assistance with lost children or guests and first aid.

Conducts emergency equipment inspections and public safety audits as directed.

Ensure compliance with the provisions of Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations.

Maintain control over, and issue keys under the control of, the Health &Safety Branch.

Staffs the reception desk & Control Centre as required. Works rotating day and night shifts, weekends & holidays and may be required to work overtime.

Assists guests on-site as required and ensures excellent customer service is provided by Zoo staff.

On night shifts assist with after hour events, conduct patrols of the zoo property using our touring software, report insecure doors and discrepancies to day shift for follow up.

In the absence of a Supervisor or Lead Hand, may be appointed to act as Lead Hand, providing guidance and direction to Security Services staff. (Does not apply to probationary officers)

Other related duties as assigned by Supervisor/Manager.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Must possess a diploma in Law Enforcement, Law & Security, Criminology or the equivalent.

Previous two (2) years experience in law enforcement or security work.

Must be able to deal with staff and public in an efficient and courteous manner.

Possess good verbal and written communication skills.

Working knowledge WHMIS legislation, Ontario Occupational Health and Safety Act, Trespass to Property Act, applicable sections of the Criminal Code and Liquor Control Act.

Possess a valid First Aid and CPR certificate.

Must possess a full Class “G” driver’s license along with a good driving record.

Must possess a Security Guard and Private Investigators License under the Private Security & Investigative Services Act Current firearms license (PAL) an asset.

Able to work rotating shifts, weekends and holidays.
