Your Opportunity:

Professor Cosima Porteus, in the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Toronto Scarborough, invites applicants for the position of Research Associate (Limited Term) to conduct collaborative research on the effects of carbon dioxide on the behavior and physiology of fish in an aquaculture setting. Primary research interests are in understanding the effects of high carbon dioxide and interactions with diet to reduce stress and improve the survival, growth and feed efficiency of lake whitefish in wild and cultured settings.

This opportunity of a Research Associate (Limited Term) is a 2 (two)-year appointment and the anticipated start date is December 1, 2023.

 


Qualifications (Minimum Qualifications):

Candidates must have a Ph.D. in Animal Physiology or related field, and at least four (4) years of postdoctoral or comparable academic experience in aquaculture research, with demonstrated academic and research excellence. Excellence is to be demonstrated through publications in high-quality peer-reviewed journals in fish aquaculture. A proven track record of creativity in developing experimental strategies and analyzing immune response, fatty acid, transcriptomics, digestion, nutrition and fish growth data is required, in addition to demonstrating a high degree of collaborative research with industry. The candidate must also have demonstrated experience in preparing manuscripts for submission to peer-review publications / journals relating to aquaculture research. Strong interpersonal and communication skills are required. Must be able to demonstrate the ability to work positively with others in a collaborative work environment. Job Duties:

The candidate will be responsible for the conceptualization, execution, communication, and dissemination of aquaculture related research as directed by Prof. Cosima Porteus. Beyond these responsibilities, the successful candidate may be expected to participate in the preparation of research presentations; grant applications; research supervisions of two or more students and other trainees. At all times, the individual is expected to support the overall research and teaching missions of Prof. Porteus’ research group.

 

The normal hours of work per week for a 100% FTE full-time Research Associate (Limited Term) is 36.25 hours per week.

 


Travel:

Moderate travelling would be required. The Research Associate will be expected to present research at academic conferences. Additionally, there will be monthly trips to the study site in Elmira, Ontario to perform experiments, for a total of about 6 trips per year, although more might be required to achieve project aims.
