POSITION SUMMARY:
Working under the direction of the Investigator and/or senior staff, the Research Technician I performs moderately complex laboratory functions and experiments focused on the regulation and function of the MYC oncogene in cancer and exploring the utility and mechanism of cholesterol-control drugs (statins) as anti-cancer agents. The Research Technician will primarily perform gene cloning, tissue culture, qRT-PCR, ChIP-PCR, and mouse experiments. The candidate will also be required to perform several essential lab functions, including but not limited to: compiling, interpreting and analyzing experimental results; communicating and maintaining records of experimental data, monitoring, ordering, and maintaining lab inventories of biological/chemical agents, supplies, animals and/or equipment; maintaining records of safety training and other health and safety paperwork. In addition, the candidate will be expected to read the scientific literature associated with the project, contribute to the design and interpretation of their experiments, and participate in lab and inter-lab meetings. Due to the precise and technically challenging nature of this work, the candidate will be expected to function in a highly detail-oriented manner and display a high level of commitment to the project.
Working in a fast-paced environment, we require a biologist with strong cell biology/molecular biology experience who can multi-task and enjoy contributing to research at many levels. The lab is situated in the Princess Margaret Cancer Research Tower. Thus, the candidate will be part of a rich and vibrant scientific community.
Responsibilities:
Conduct research, and accurately record and interpret results
Ensure the smooth daily operation of an active research lab
Order and expedite supplies
Train staff and students on established procedures
Maintain equipment
Maintain lab inventory of supplies and reagents
Implement new laboratory techniques and technical developments
Utilize various software and web-based tools for research, lab organization as well as performing mathematical calculations for data analysis
Qualifications:
B.Sc. or M.Sc. in biological science or related field
Experience in cell biology/molecular biology
Experience with handling mice and conducting animal experiments or a willingness to learn
Demonstrated interest and ability in continuous learning
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Excellent interpersonal skills
Excellent organizational skills
Computer literacy
Able to work independently, yet as a team, and readily handles responsibility
