As a Technical Specialist reporting to the Senior Manager of Data Engineering, you are a strong Database Administrator capable of balancing your focus on both present and emerging database technology. You can successfully manage and support on-prem and cloud database management systems (relational, NoSQL, Open Source). You are very comfortable with cross-platform data migration and consolidation tasks, database tuning and resource management. You want in on the ground floor of a data-centred transformation by contributing your growing DBA and cloud architecture expertise to new initiatives. Others describe you as a team-oriented asset highly skilled in emotional intelligence, exceedingly efficient, capable of seeing the big picture, and passionate about enabling digital healthcare.
Your daily impact (as part of a DBA team) will include:
- Building and maintaining unstructured, relational and cloud-based database management systems
- Traditional management tasks on database clusters in Postgres, Oracle (Cloud), SQL Server
- Exploratory work in NoSQL databases
- Actively planning and executing database consolidation on multiple major platforms
- Continuously improving the security (e.g. encryption – active and at rest), monitoring and tuning of all enterprise database management across all architecture stacks
- Proactively detecting and fixing database issues before the effects are known to the business
- Planning, executing, maintaining and regularly testing High Availability and Disaster Recovery architecture
- Working with ETL Architects to maintain and expand use of Azure Data Factory
- Aiding Data Lake teams / exploring Data Lake technology
- Integrating databases with third party monitoring / backup solutions (Service Now, SolarWinds, Commvault, etc.)
- Masterfully balancing resources and scheduling to maintain performance with concrete resource limits
- Administering Microsoft Azure Data Factory / Power BI Gateways
- Possibility of on-call duties on a rotational basis
- Participation in creating a road-map for technical advancement through technical documentation
- Migrating and consolidating databases and servers to upgraded virtual and/or cloud environments
- Working closely with data warehouse specialists to optimize data modelling practices and performance
- Assisting the organization in various data-driven road maps: Database technologies, Master Data Management, Data Governance, etc.
- Working directly with vendors to follow best practices for database administration and data modelling
- Vendor management in the areas of technical support, consulting and education opportunities
- Learning and teaching others on your team and in the organization
- Project and operations responsibilities not explicitly listed above, both individually and as part of project teams
Minimum Qualifications:
- A Computer Science / Computer Engineering / Mathematics / related major bachelor’s degree or equivalent is required
- 5 years of quality Technical Specialist expertise / demonstrable hands-on skills across mixed database technologies – RDBMS, cloud-based and/or NoSQL
- A figure-it-out mentality with a positive, team-oriented attitude; a demonstrated history of a charismatic self-starter who drives change
- Superior verbal and written communication skills, Emotional Intelligence
- A proven ability to adapt priorities in a complex, fast-paced, fluid environment
- Experience working on Agile projects and/or teams required
- Able to work effectively individually and in a team environment with other DBA’s with overlapping platform expertise
Preferred Qualifications:
- Proficient with MySQL, Postgres, Oracle 18c, SQL Server 2016/2019
- Certifications in relevant technologies preferred (ITIL, PostgreSQL, NoSQL, OCA/OCP, MSCE, etc.)
- Hands-on cloud Technology: Oracle Exadata Cloud, Azure SQL Database, Azure Data Factory
- Commvault backup and recovery experience preferred
- Service Now experience preferred
- Experience with NoSQL databases and data lake technology
- Master Data Management general knowledge preferred
- Ontario healthcare sector experience preferred
