Summerhill Market is looking for a Assistant Deli Department Manager to join the Deli team at our Rosedale location.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Oversee day to day deli department operations including: stocking shelves, placing orders with vendors, reviewing invoices, managing deli associates, supporting the department manager and providing mentoring
  • Preparing, slicing, wrapping, weighing, and pricing deli products, to customer specifications (including: deli meats, cheeses, salads, sandwiches, dips, gourmet, party trays and hot case items)
  • Responsible for ordering, inventory and waste monitoring
  • Merchandising product displays
  • Optimizing sales and service through direct customer interaction as well as providing coaching and management of their team’s sales and service tasks
  • Handle product damages and credits according to company policy
  • Meet with upper management on a regular basis and provide information and advise on any department issues including staffing issues, customer issues, merchandising opportunities and forecasting
  • Human resource management, including: hiring, training and the handling of any disciplinary issues that may arise
  • The ability to negotiate with suppliers with regard to new product implementation, samplings, establishing deals and receiving the best possible prices and rebates
  • Must be able to work any and all shifts, working a varied schedule in order to have the best overview of department operations. This means the ability to work weekends & holidays, openings & closings as necessary
  • Maintaining an awareness of all product knowledge information, product promotions, test products and advertisements

Skillset Requirements:

  • Passion for food – you are a true foodie at heart!
  • Dedication to delivering an exceptional Customer experience – you love our customers as much as we do!
  • 5 years+ experience of grocery/deli industry experience; 2 years+ managing a team
  • Being an effective and positive communicator – having great listening skills patience and knowing how to de-escalate challenging situations
  • Previous grocery or food industry experience along with a Food Safety Handlers Certification is an asset
  • Proficient in MS Office with the ability to learn new systems (ERP, CRM, ordering tools, etc.)
  • Ability to use scales to weigh foods and proper operation of deli equipment, including slicers and ovens
  • Excellent communication skills (verbally and written) with a customer focused mindset and the ability to receive direction well
  • Collaborative with the ability to work in a dynamic team to create solutions in support of store operations
  • Able to stand, reach, lift, bend, kneel, stoop, climb, push and pull items weighing 50 pounds or less
  • Flexible availability to work morning, evening, and weekend shifts with the ability to accommodate various shift coverage on short notice
  • Maintaining Health and Safety Standards as defined under the Health and Safety Act
  • Comfortable working in a cooler environment, entering coolers/freezers as needed
  • Tech savvy with the ability to learn our ERP, inventory ordering system
  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred
